Black and white (sepia) photograph of Elisabeth Rethberg. She is in a standing pose in front of what appears to be a theatrical Greek- or Roman-style column and wears an ornate dress, jewelry, and heels. No date, circa 1920s. 8" x 10." There is very minimal staining mostly on top-left edge of the photograph. Photograph is otherwise very clean and undamaged. There are two original stamps on the back. One says, "Elisabeth Rethberg, Soprano, Metropolitan Opera Company, Management, Evans and Salter, 527 Fifth Avenue, New York." The other lists the address and copyright policy of the photography studio, Wide World Studio. Elisabeth Rethberg (1894-1976) was a German opera singer who sang professionally from the time of World War I through the early 1940s. She studied in Germany and performed in both Europe and the U.S. Rethberg made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1922.
