Original publisher's dark blue cloth binding with gilt lettering on front cover and spine. Black border decorations on top and bottom of front cover and spine. 5 3/4" x 8." 366 pages, complete. Black-and-white illustrations, complete. Former owner's pencil inscription dated 1879 on front free endpaper. Pages and covers are very clean and intact overall. Binding is tight. Pages have slight age toning and a few stains on Pages 18-21 (text is still readable). There is moderate wear along the edges and at the corners and head and tail of spine. Slight rubbing to front and back with a few scratch marks. A Very Good copy. A collection of letters penned by Franc B. Wilkie (1832-1892), an American newspaper journalist and author. He was recruited as a war correspondent during the Civil War and reported on events such as camp life, battles, and the like. Wilkie worked for a number of different newspapers over the years and established the London bureau of the Chicago Times. In these letters, Wilkie's gives his impressions and opinions of the people and ways of life in England (Part I) and other parts of Europe (Part II), such as Paris, Waterloo, Holland, Amsterdam, the Rhine, and the Alps. Excerpt from the Preface: "The letters which make up this book are part of those sent to The Chicago Times from Europe, during the years 1877 and 1878. They include no portion of the correspondence which related to the Russo-Turkish war, or English politics. ... It should be noted that the fault-finding, in the case of the English, is confined to what may be termed their external character; and that there is no partisanship in the writer's views, because he has nowhere failed to denounce the weaknesses and follies of his own countrymen whenever the opportunity to do so fairly presented itself. In Part II., while it is true that there was an extension party made up substantially as represented, it is also true that the majority of the conversations reported did not occur.
