'Tales of a Devon Village',with its companion volume 'Life in a Devon Village',is compiled from material gathered together originally in two books Willamson wrote some years previous and called 'The Village Book' and 'The Labouring Life'.Both dealt with an observed and authenticated period that had passed away - the first decade between the two industrial wars of the 20thC.The author was never fully satisfied with them; they were a collection of varying fragments rather than unified books.
Now [then 1944/5] Williamson after an interval of several years of hard physical work,as labourer and farmer, has set about giving each book its own unity, based on what spirit of truth accompanied his life.
