UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.VG/GOOD.No owner inscrptn, but 'ghost' residue of top edge of an adhesive label/bookplate of some sort (no longer in situ),to top edge of the rear,b/w line illustrated pastedown, having slightly but minisculely, removed some of that illustration.Towards bottom corner of same pastedown, some minimal, red paper?/ ink? bleeding.Publisher's price to dw/dj's front inner flap amateurishly removed by an inverted L tear.Dw/dj slightly grubbed with darkened spine/backstrip,extremities creased and chipped, with aged sellotape repair/strengthening to 4 small individual closed tears along with it's top rear edges along with partially, some more, wider tape repair/strenthening - internally - from the front inner flap towards and just past the head of spine/backstrip of top edge too.3 of 4 of the corners, along with foot of spine/backstrip,are all with tears, chipping and rubbing and sellotape repairs internally.Head of spine/backstrip of dw/dj some chipping with loss, only slightly affecting the first letter 'P' of the title, whilst further down the spine a couple of horizontal tears/rips - no loss - and not affecting lettering. Finally, internally to dw/dj,4 childish-hand written number lists/scores with totals,in either heavy pencil or crayon.Go figure!! [Though described hard, but fairly and honestly - it is only included in description for completeness and as bought. It seems too, that vey few copies have dw/dj in a better than VG state, condition - majority seem to be around GOOD with a selection of and from numerous and ubiquitous faults:i.e. browning, chipping, fraying, and tears+loss.] Joan Hassall (b. 1906 - d. 1988.). Born in Kensington,London, daughter of John Hassall.Educated in London and Surrey. She studied at Roehampton Froebel Training College (1922-25),London School of Art (1925-27),Royal Academy Schools (1928-33) and at evening classes at the LCC School of Photo-Engraving in Bolt Court,Fleet Street (1931-34). Taught book production at Edinburgh College of Art (1940-46).Her first illustrative commission was for a wood engraved title-page for 'Devil's Dyke' (Heinemann,1936),a book of poems by her brother Christopher Hassall. She illustrated several more of his works, but her breakthough came with Francis Brett Young's 'Portrait of a Village',1937.Her research meant she spent a great deal of time travelling around the area of Evesham and Pershore making preliminary drawings for her wood engravings and then produced a book that is generally considered as one of her best.Since then, she has worked as a wood engraver (and occasionally on scraperboard) in a meticulous style influenced by Thomas Bewick, often on small blocks for inclusion in pages of text. Her subject matter ranged from natural history through poetry to illustrations for English literary classics. Also a painter in oils and designer of book plates and pamphlets for British Rail,British Waterways,British Transport Hotels and the National Book League. She designed the invitation for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. She gave up engraving in 1974 because of failing sight.Interested in early music, and a performer on many early instruments. Elected to ARE (1938),SWE (1947),RE (1948); member of the Art Worker's Guild (Master 1972 - the first lady Master).Awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire),in 1987.
