- the early 18thc and the 20thC.A detective novel deliberately subverting any concept one might have of either of detection or history.In the 20thC narrative,detective Nicholas Hawksmoor is assigned to investigate a series of murders when the bodies of tramps and boys are discovered at seven churches in the city.There are six real London churches designed by the architect Nicholas Hawksmoor; in the world of the novel however,the 18thC architect of the London churches is given the name of Nicholas Dyer.
Time and history are drawn together in the voices of the two characters of the novel; each chapter united by a repetition of the closing words of the previous one.
Turning on the notion of repetition,in turn, leads to one of the most spectacular and at the same time,peculiar ending to any novel.
