UK,2 vols+s/case,Qrto HBs - no dws/djs - issued in a slipcase only.[Published in the 200th anniversary year of Andersen's birth 1805,he died 1875.] MINT/NFINE - Book,slipcase.No owner inscrptn.Navy blue paper-covered card box slipcase with bright,crisp gilt decoration to one side; with negligible shelf-wear to edges and corners - a small abrasion with minimal paper loss and scoring to unillustrated side of s/case,back of slipcase also with some minor indentation - realistically - the only noticeable detracting faults of note,hence grade of NFINE for the s/case.However,Vols I + II bright,crisp,clean and unblemished,solid and sound - virtually MINT and both with publisher's original turquoise cloth boards highly decorated with bright,crisp printed turquoise+b/w illustration with bright,crisp silver+gilt decoration to both the front board and spine/ backstrip; with no discernible faults/ detractions - no shelf-wear,no bumping to edges or corners,no foxing/spotting or any other blemishes.Both volumes with immaculate plain, navy blue pastedowns and front free endpapers, and a navy blue and silver gilt striped headband.Both sets of top+fore-edges startingly bright,crisp and clean - immaculate with no marks,blemishes or thumbing; contents bright, crisp,clean,solid and sound - virtually pristine - exception of a possible production fault (?) wrinkle and definitely NOT a crease,to pp459/60 in Vol II - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - therefore appears unread,apart from my own collation. The books are translated by Jean Hersholt into English from the original Danish of her translation of 'The Complete Andersen.' which was first published by The Limited Editions,NY, in 1949,and subsequently published for general sale under the imprint of the Heritage Press. This present edition follows the text of the latter edition but rearranged in chronological order and with minor emendations.A preface by Brian Alderson,a 3 colour block (b/w+red) with similar colour border illustration to title page,by Peter Suart,several b/w vignettes to the preliminary pages of each volume,by Vilhelm Pedersen,reproduced direct from the Vilhelm Pedersen originals in the Hans Andersen Museum at Odense.With full-page colour+b/w illustrations in a variety of mediums,by numerous artists of note,namely: Kay Nielsen, Kay,Arthur Rackham,Edmund Dulac,Mabel Lucie Attwell,Chris Riddell,Michael Foreman,et al., amongst others.To the rear of Volume II; Editor's notes on the stories,biographical notes on the illustrators and illustrations acknowledgements.
