The subjects of the portraits are the "Fireside Poets" - William Cullen Bryant, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, and John Greenleaf Whittier - along with Ralph Waldo Emerson. The Fireside Poets were a group of popular American poets whose work was accessible to the average reader and was read around the fireside by families, hence the name.
