View of Thomas Circle, a traffic circle in Northwest Washington, D. C., looking northeast from the Portland Flats luxury apartments, built in 1879 and razed in 1962. Nice view of the statue of General George Henry Thomas (1816-1870), a Union General during the Civil War known as the "Rock of Chickamauga". The statue was sculpted by John Quincy Adams Ward (1830-1910) and erected in 1871. In the background in the Memorial Evangelical Lutheran Church (now known as the Luther Place Memorial Church), a neo-gothic church built in 1873 as a memorial to peace and reconciliation after the Civil War..
