Port of call for the Spanish gold fleets where the gold and silver was transported over the isthmus to be loaded on ships bound for Spain, a center for pirates that preyed on the fleets, among them Drake and Morgan, during the California Gold Rush it was a center of transport for passengers headed up the coast to California and now has become the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal.
