String bound, blue paper wrapper present but detached, significant chipping. 28 pages. The Credit Mobilier Company was established by the Union Pacific Railroad in 1864 to act as a screen in an effort to defraud the government of railroad construction funds. In 1868, Congressman Oakes Ames distributed stock and cash bribes to several office holders. James Garfield (1831-1881) was one of the Representatives accused of involvement. This pamphlet is an attempt to clear Mr. Garfield's name. He was elected President in 1880, so it appears the scandal did not affect him.. Book. Book Condition: Collectible-Good. Binding: Soft cover
