The Credit Mobilier Company was established by the Union Pacific Railroad in 1864 to act as a screen in an effort to defraud the government of railroad construction funds. In 1868, Congressman Oakes Ames distributed stock and cash bribes to several office holders. James Garfield (1831-1881) was one of the Representatives accused of involvement.
