Anonymous : Spanish American War Manuscript Document; Washington D. C. And Havana, February/March, 1898

One page, 12 x 17. The document requests "freedom of passage" for an Albert Miller (travel papers). It is a Secretary of State form filled out to identify Miller's physical characteristics, is numbered 12162 and has a large red seal of the U.S. State Department. It bears the stamped signature of John Sherman, U. S. Secretary of State and the handwritten signature of Miller. It is dated February 21, 1898. On the verso the document is twice signed by a Spanish official in Havana, first on February 28, 1898, and secondly on March 26, 1898. Apparently Miller traveled to Cuba only two weeks after the USS Maine was destroyed (Feb. 15) and again when negotiations between the United States, Cuba, and Spain were reaching their boiling point. By each signature of the Spanish official are several Cuban paper stamps affixed to the documents along with inked rubber stamp imprints.. Book. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good.
