Circa 1840-1850. Original chapbook, once bound, with an illustration of two men sword fighting on the front, no. 102 under the publisher's information. One sheet of paper folded to make 24 pages, unopened. 3 3/4 x 6 inches. Chapbooks were an early form of popular literature, originating in the 16th century and fading out of use by the mid-19th century. They were cheaply printed booklets that "chapmen" would sell door to door or at fairs to the common people. This one contains three stories in verse, the first two in ballad form.. Book.
