Fred Bailey's life history is detailed in this lot of 25 diaries along with 13 notebooks/account books/ledgers, which appear to be kept by the same man, and date from 1903 - 1928 (1916 is missing). He did not write his name down in any of the books, but research finds that these were all kept by Fred P. Bailey of Charlestown, NH. He was a farmer, who got married during the course of these diaries and had a son George. He talks of the usual things such as the weather and chores, and also talks of family, social engagements and visiting Walpole, NH and B. Falls (Bellows Falls, VT). The notebooks date from the 1890's to 1930's and contain accounts of his cows and hens, etc., along with notes about doings on the farm. Some examples of his entries are: "1927 - Mostly Fair. I went after silage and greased touring car. George stole some matches and set a grass fire back of house. We got it out in time, so no harm done. I whipped him and sent him to bed. 1920 - A fairly good day, a little cold. Bathed and loafed some. Took heifer off. A bad wreck just across the river. Two trains came together head on. I went over to see it. I never saw such a piled up mess. They said there were several killed. I had just a glimpse of it as it happened. Got a few dishes as souvenirs. There was one car of them broken open. 1911 - Worked on the the water today. Got it started, but it stopped again. Had a little party at the house this eve. Bessie and Ruby and Mrs. Smith came down. Played whist for the most part. 1917- Quite a good day. Warm wind from south. We all went up to the Leaches to hear the talking machine awhile today. I bathed and did chores and cleaned horse stalls and fixed water tank. 1906 - A fine day, quite hot. I hoed garden awhile this forenoon. We cleaned up the oats this forenoon. This afternoon we got in the orchard hay. This evening, Carrie and I went for a drive. Had a fine drive. We got awful soft coming home, foolishly so. I guess we'll get over it though. 1905 - Fair most of the day. We were out at Aunt Nan's most of the day. We came in about 4 o'clock and I worked propping up a peach tree and most of the forenoon mending a fence. This evening, Etta and Nan and I went to a social at the Church. Had a pretty good time. 1921 - Quite a nice day for the most party. Cloudy this eve, threatens storm. Took Bessie to B. Falls to see the Dr. for her treatment this pm. Got separator ready for use, as I have been rated on my mills and will have to separate some. White washed stables also this pm. No resolutions this year, except just to make it the best I can in every way." He wrote most days, some days more than others and some years more than others. His writing is legible, and it is a wonderful collection.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Good+
