BARRIE, J. M. AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED. One sheet, white paper, creased once where the sheet had been folded. 6 1/4 by 4 inches. Writing to both sides. Letterhead: 133, Gloucester Road. S. W. Date: 24 March 1902. Mounted in a window mat and framed, with a contemporary photograph of J. M. Barrie. The letter is addressed to William Dana Orcutt, American author and type designer, who had invited Barrie to write an introduction to "Macbeth" in an elaborate edition of Shakespeare's Works which he was planning to publish at the University Press. Barrie politely declines the offer saying "the thing tempts me, but I feel that I lack the skill to write to much purpose on a subject that has already been so nobly handled." Barrie and Orcutt were members of the Garrick Club and maintained a congenial relationship for many years; this letter is from early in their acquaintance. The letter is signed "Yours sincerely, J.M. Barrie." The photograph, a portrait almost in profile, shows Barrie as Orcutt describes him at that time: "a sensitive little man, with a rather long neck, hair receding from his forehead, and a heavy mustache."
