Original publisher's hand-colored engraved map of Sussex, England. A beautiful map that features pink, yellow, beige, and green watercoloring. Major cities are shown along with features such as parks (colored green) and roads. The surrounding counties of Hampshire, Surrey, and Kent are labeled as well as the English Channel to the south. Map with margins measures 11 3/4" x 9"; actual map area measures 10 1/4" x 8 3/8." Map is very clean and intact. Title printed at bottom-center on top of a decorative compass rose with a fleur-de-lis at the north point. Scale of distance in statute miles printed beneath the title. Axes of latitude and longitude also included. The following is printed beneath the neatline: "London: Publish'd Jany. 1st, 1793 by J. Cary. Engraver & Mapseller, Strand." John Cary (c. 1754-1835) was an English cartographer who established his own business on the Strand (a major thoroughfare in Westminster, London) in 1783. He made a name for himself with his comprehensive maps and atlases including The New and Correct English Atlas (1787), which became a standard reference work in England, and Cary's New Itinerary (1798), which included all the roads in England and Wales..
