New endpapers, engraved frontispiece, over 100 illustrations (full page and fractional pages). Condition of binding: Expected wear, chips, abrasion marks, shelf wear. Crack to first hinge, rear hinge starting (but still tight). Internally: Scattered foxing and some old humidity marks, mostly to preliminary blank pages (and rear blank pages), lightly age toned, corner creases and minor wrinkling. Previous owner's name to first blank page. Small piece missing at foot of pgs. 19/20; closed tear to pgs. 611/612. Else overall Good to Very Good. Pages are surprisingly clear; text clean and readable; illustrations clean and vivid. Binding tight overall, not cocked. Free of stickers, bookplates, writing/underlines in text block. A nice antiquarian book. According to the preface, this major work takes an extensive view of birds, according to a classification which is easily understood and remembered. The author availed himself of the recorded observations of the most eminent naturalist worldwide.
