New York and other places, 1899-1915. Minnie Maddern Fiske (1865-1932) was born in New Orleans, made her acting debut at the age of three, and was in starring roles by the time she was sixteen. In 1890 she married Harrison Grey Fiske. She helped to popularize Henrick Ibsen's plays in America. These letters are to Viola Winter Stilson (Mrs. Fielding Stilson), the daughter of prominent New York drama critic William Winter (1836-1917). Viola lived in Los Angeles during the period these letters were written, but often visited New York. Most of the letters are written from New York, some are from other locations while she was out on tour. She shows both her exuberance for life and her strong affection for Viola Stilson in this collection. She writes about traveling, work, and the pressures of work. Occasionally she had to go to the Adirondacks to regain her health. Many of the letters are short notes in which Minnie asks Viola to come to dinner, to the theater to see her perform, to come backstage, to visit during rehearsals. All signed with much love..
