circa. 1870. Original Carte-de-Viste photograph (2 3/8 x 4 inch) with publisher's name on the back, name written in pencil. William Gladstone (1809-1898) served as Prime Minister of England four times [1860-74; 1880-1885; 1886; 1892-1894] as the head of the Liberal Party. He also served as Chancellor of the Exchequer four times. Gladstone entered Parliament in 1832 as a 'Peelite' and slowing moved leftward till his wing of the party merged with the Whigs and Radicals in 1859. Among the major measures passed under him were - disestablishment of the Church of England; introduction of the secret vote; avoiding the Franco-Prussian War; and his long struggle for home rule in Ireland which was always defeated under him.
