UK,12mo HB,1st edn.[The practice by the British Museum of dating all books when first catalogued was most helpful.But the loss of records and and books in the 1941 London bombing air raids of WW2 (which also destroyed Blackie's "50 Old Bailey" so common on Henty title pages) was an irreparable misfortune and loss.] VG++.No owner inscrptn to light grey eps.Bright, crisp,generally clean,sharp-cornered - but with ubiquitous,miniscule bumping and rubbing to corners - publisher's original colour+gilt decorated,bevelled green cloth covered bds.Front bd with decoration of a soldier in black,white,red,green,cream and gilt,with an arm in a sling and a rifle under other arm,within a white border edged panel with bright,crisp,stamped gilt lettered title and author's name in bright but lightly faded/aged,crisp,stamped tan ink to bottom,right-hand corner of illustration's panel.Bright,crisp,clean, spine/backstrip decorated with gilt+ coloured decoration of office's cocked hat,sword,and a strapped pouch/satchel etc.,gilt lettered title to top of panel, author's gilt name to foot of same; all within a white border edged panel.The forward obliques,i.e. /,in the following title page description,are used to indicate a blank space or line between the preceding and following written words. Title page: With Moore at Corunna/By/G. A. Henty/Author of (list of titles - 5)/line/ With twelve illustrations by Wal Paget(all called for and present)/line/publisher's device/London/Blackie & Son,Limited,50 Old Bailey,E.C./Glasgow and Dublin/1898. Contents: 5 x 7.1/2 inches (Crown 8voHB), light grey endpapers,half-title,with Blackie's list of Henty titles to verso, b/w illustration frntis,title page (as above and already described),a preface, separate contents and illustrations lists/ tables,2 b/w Battle of Corunna,Northern Portugal and Battle of Rolica maps to pp178,pp80 respectively - both not listed in illustrations,vipp+12-384pp [paginated] comprising XXII (22) chapters and 32pp {paginated] publisher's b/w illustrated catalogue at rear.All pages' edges burnished olivine.Top edges partially discoloured with an indeterminate splash/ stain and again another similar indeterminate discolouring to pages' bottom edges towards the foot of the spine/backstrip.Contents generally though, bright,tight,clean,solid and sound; tight hinges,minimal foxing/spotting in text body and a diagonal corner crease to pp347/8's top corner - no other reading (?) creases noted. A tale of the Peninsular War.'A very spirited story,well worthy to be ranked with the best of Mr Henty's work.Terence O'Connor,up to the time of the opening of the tale,has done little but get into mischief,but as soon as he feels the resposibility of being one of Mr Henty's heroes,combines discretion with courage, not forgetting,however,to spice the mixture with a little fun.' - Spectator. Walter Stanley Paget(1863-1935).Worked as Walter (Wal) Paget.Younger brother of H[enry] M[arriott] Paget and Sidney Paget. A figure painter,magazine and book illustrator.As a war correspondent for 'The Illustrated London News',he covered the Gordon relief expedition (1884-85), and,like his brother Sidney,later became a staff artist on the newly founded periodical 'The Sphere' (from 1900).As a book illustrator in colour,b/w,and halftone,he worked in a reliably conventional vein.He lived for many years in London and died at Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.He is said to have been used by his brother Sidney as the original model for Sherlock Holmes. He illustrated 8 other Henty titles, spanning 'Easter Dawn' - 1889 to 'With the Allies to Pekin' - 1904. Since April 2013 and again in March 2015, and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template,altering it's prices,weight allowances,dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too!
