Book Extract; This fine Jacobean house is a striking landmarklying about 4 miles outside of Mold, CountyClwyd, 200 yards west of the Wrexham-Mold road.(See back cover)Plas Teg is a unique, elegant house, built in apleasing Renaissance symmetry for Tudornobility. Drawings by John Thorpe in the SloaneMuseum suggest that the designer was RobertSmythson who was responsible for Woollaton Hallin Nottinghamshire. When newly built in 1610, it was referred to asPLACE TEG but the name PLAS TEG, the bestrendition, has changed little over thecenturies. A good translation of the name wouldbe "FAIR MANSION" and the fact that the nameoccurred before the present house was built maybe the strongest indication of a previousdwelling.THE TREVORSA.D.1400: The first recorded occupants of aprevious house built on the site of Plas Tegwere the members of the Ithel family who livedin Hopedale in 1400 when father and son rose inrebellion with Owain Glyndwr and were killed.A.D.1450: For some years a house at Plas Teg wasoccupied by people with English names, Saxterand Wattenhall. Ellis Wattenhall supported Welshbards, among them Tudr Penllyn, who praised himin verse.A.D.1480: The Trevors could trace theirancestry back to Gwrtheyrn Gwrtheneu [Vortigen],King of Britain, who died in A.D.383. and theyfirst arrived in Plas Teg when Robert Trevormarried Catherine, daughter of Llewelyn ap Itheland heiress of the estate of Plas Teg. RobertTrevor died in 1487 and was buried in ValleCrucis Abbey, called by the Welsh bards, the"House of the Old Cross"., 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall, Good
