This was originally intended to be published as the 3rd 'Owen West' (another of Koontz's pseudonyms) novel,under the title 'THE PIT.',and is more of a horror story than most of what the author has written to date (then 1984.).It is also a police procedural,however,and something of a love story,so the cross-genre aspect that has made Koontz so popular is apparent even in this work intended to appear under a pseudonym. Due to the increasing success of Koontz's other novels between the publication of the first two 'WEST' novels - 'THE FUNHOUSE.' and 'THE MASK.' - and this title,both he and the publisher mutually agreed to terminate the WEST pseudonym. As an aside,the UK published title was the author's preferred title!
