The first comprehensive check list of South African Lepidoptera (excluding Rhopalocera) was compiled by Dr A J T Janse and published by the Transvaal Museum in 1917 entitles "Check List of the South African Lipidoptera Heterocera", this volume listed 3607 species. In the present catalogue, including the Rhopalcera, the number of entries has increased to over 8300 species comprising numerous unavoidable duplications in respect of subspecies - x, plus 198 pages detailed text.
