Raised spinal bands, gilt titles and decorative motifs in each spinal compartment. All edges gilt. Marbled end-papers and ribbon marker. Corners lightly bruised. Text-block not properly cased so although it is firm and tight in its binding, it does not sit flush against the rear board. Carl Bock, a Norwegian born naturalist, was commissioned by the Dutch authorities to report on the natives races of the interior of Borneo. However, his main object of the mission to the Dutch Indies was to make a collection of the fauna of the western parts of the interior of Sumatra. Unfortunately a large part of the collection was lost when the ship sank on the return voyage. The wonderful, colourful plates made after drawings by the author depict different kinds of natives, their housing and examples of Dayak tattoo and ornament.. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good +.
