Book Extract; The name "distance slabs" has been given to a series of large, oftenhighly ornate, stone tablets found in central Scotland along the line of theAntonine Wall. Each slab bears an inscription in Latin detailingcontributions made by construction parties from the Roman legions to thebuilding of the Wall.The Antonine Wall was built about the year 142 AD in the reign of theemperor Antoninus Pius from whom it takes its modern name. It ran acrossScotland from Old Kilpatrick on the Clyde to Bridgeness on the Forth, adistance of 37 miles. Carefully positioned on the southern side of the Kelvinand Carron valleys, it had a fine outlook northwards towards the Campsieand Kilsyth Hills, and, further east, across the Firth of Forth (fig 1).The defences consisted ofa rampart of turf set on a stone base, which wasfronted by a broad ditch, and accompanied on the southern side by acontinuous road, the Military Way.
