MAURICE MAETERLINCK : The Treasure of the Humble. Translated from the French of 'Le Trésor des Humbles' by Alfred Sutro, and with an introduction by A.B.Walkley

George Allen, London, 1897

The first English edition (first printing), issued a year after the original French edition. 8vo. xvi, 225pp. Decorated green cloth, lettered and bordered in gold at the spine and upper board. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. The title page printed in red and black. A little darkening to the cloth at the backstrip, and the ends there a little worn. Corners tips gently bumped and with a single tiny blemish to the base of the upper board. Free endpapers very lightly toned, and with a little spotting to several preliminary and concluding leaves, and to occasional text leaves. Contemporary former owner initials inked to the front pastedown, and former dealer's details discreetly inkstamped to the base of a blank flyleaf. Binding just a little tender at one gathering. A very good copy. Walkley's ten-page introduction precedes ten of the Nobel Laureate's reflective mystical essays - his first such collection (three essays which appeared in the original French edition are here omitted). Uncommon.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover
