Original publisher's red limp suede binding. 5 1/2" x 7 7/8." Seventy-eight pages, complete. Pink cloth paste-downs on insides of covers. Gilt lettering and impressed decoration on front cover. Very clean copy. Minimal wear on covers. Pages are very clean and intact except for very slight browning on the edges. First few pages (blank) are loose. Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was an acclaimed British novelist, essayist, poet, and travel writer. He is known for Treasure Island, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Kidnapped, and A Child's Garden of Verses. Virginibus Puerisque was his first collection of essays. The essays support defiance of human hardships and bourgeois anti-intellectualism. This copy was printed in one of the Roycroft Shops founded by Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915), an American writer, publisher, and businessman, and features decorative typeface and Roycroft paper (watermark visible on some pages). Hubbard opened the Roycroft Press in 1893 and opened the Roycroft Shops and founded the Roycroft artist community in 1895. The Roycrofters are known for being part of the Arts and Crafts movement..
