Book Extract; THE GREAT RELIGIOUS HOUSES; MONKS AND FRIARSthe first thing to do in reading this chapter is to geta clear idea of what is meant by saying that a man wasa monk and lived in a monastery. If we go back to quite an early period in the historyof Christianity we find that people began even thento think they would be better Christians if, instead ofliving like other people, they separated themselves andlived apart, giving a great deal of time to prayer insteadof working at some kind of business. To carry out this, many went and lived by themselves in deserts, and forthat reason got to be called hermits. It will be remem-bered that it was such a hermit whom the representativesof the British Church consulted when they were goingto have their meeting with Augustine. After awhileothers thought that it would be better if, instead of livingquite alone, those who wished to separate themselves fromthe world lived together under strict rules, with some oneover them as their head. Those who adopted this kindof life were called monks if they were men, and nunsif they were women : and their home was called a mon-astery or convent., 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall, Good
