UNIDENTIFIED : 1945 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT AND PHOTOGRAPHIC DIARY AND 'HOMAGE' TO HITLER'S MANIPULATION OF YOUNG GERMAN GIRLS IN THE BUND DEUTSCHE MADEL - BDM

12 x 8.5. On offer is an extraordinary 1940s manuscript and photographic relic of the Nazi Regime and Adolf Hitler's manipulation of German youth and specifically young girls being a League of German Girls [or League of German Maidens, Bund Deutsche Madel (BDM) in German] the female branch of the Nazi party youth movement, the Hitler Youth. It was the only female youth organization in Nazi Germany besides the RAD camp for girls and boys. This 12 x 8.5 inch album with 71 photos 16 album pages as a handwritten diary trip to Danzig is a handwritten account of a "Grossfahrt" - literally, a "big trip or journey" something that was planned annually for each BDM group/camp and restricted to those who'd done well on previous, shorter trips. These trips were done partially on foot, (the girls "marched" a lot) and partially using trains at discounted rates, or ships on the rivers. Each girl carried her pack and bed-roll. This particular trip went in a north-easterly direction. The writer mentions riding in a ladder-wagon (possibly a hay wagon) but having to walk from Pakosch (Polish: Pakosc) in what was then Pomerania/Prussia) and on. The journey takes them through Bromberg (Bydgoszcz, Poland) and Marienwerder (Kwidzyn, Poland) to Danzig (Gdansk), much of it by a steam ship or on foot. Descriptions of an old Castle/fortress (Neueburg) and stopping at a boys camp, sleeping on straw in an abandoned hotel or restaurant, and on another occasion in an old mill, and on the first day, crossing a river with a small punt, where the first 10 girls to cross tipped the boat, soaking themselves and even the provisions. In Danzig they toured the city, and saw ships in the harbour, including the SMS Arcona (SMS Arcona was a small, unarmoured cruiser of the German Imperial Navy. It was named after Cape Arkona on the German island of Rügen.) This particular trip went from August 16th to September 3rd. We believe that the author wrote retrospectively circa late 1944 or early 1945 as the writer mentions that the group that had their big trip in 1940 and had arranged a reunion to meet in the youth hostel at 4 pm on the 22nd of August, 1945. We presume that the reunion never took place. Overall VG.. Photo Album and Diary. Book Condition: Very Good
