UNIDENTIFIED : 1948 - 1949 BRIEF ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY DETAILING LIFE IN POST WAR MILWAUKEE

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. On offer is a beautiful padded leather diary dating from 1948. Measuring approximately 8 inches by 6 inches, it has 365 pages plus a number of memoranda pages. The diary is about 15% complete. The padded leather diary is a deep green colour and shows some wear. The pages are intact and the writing is legible. The author of this diary is unknown. The entries are sparse but context suggests that she is a young woman, living at home as there are brief references to her mother and father in several entries. She is not working. From her comments, it appears that she experiences a lot of anxiety, to the point of seeing a doctor: "Dr. Purtell: No neurosis. Indecision over George led to anxiety and feeling of futility which caused feeling. Afraid of feeling because of what unknown neurosis I thought it stood for. ... " [Jan 30]. She delves into these feelings at length over the few entries in the diary and a reader can see her struggle to feel happier and more fulfilled. Although we don't see how the year ends, the few entries later in the year reflect a more upbeat temperament. She enjoys being with the boys that she knows and friends socializing. "Johnny Doherty called and asked if I'd like to go out. We went to Pete Marinos and had one bottle of beer. Then to Happy Daze and had one bottle of beer. Then to Collie [ ] where we talked for a long time. ... Necked for two hours." [Jan 1]. "Went shopping with Ruth for our lunch for tomorrow. Johnny D called." [July 30]. "Ruth, Ev, her girlfriend and I went to see the Brewers play Toledo. Our Brewers lost 2-1 ... " [July 17]. "This is a reference to the celebrated Toledo Mud Hens, made famous by Max Klinger (Jamie Farr) in the hit series M.A.S.H.". Although sparse, a social historian or a researcher looking at the role of women would find that her brief entries offer snippets of what life was like in mid-western America following WWII..
