12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. On offer is a charming, unusual 19th Century travel memory book. The author and creator of this lovely book used local flora and fauna of their visit on the left facing page and then a poem or writings of a noted poet or author would also memorialized the location they toured. Byron, Tennyson, Pushkin, Coleridge are but a few of the quoted poets. Some are identified by initials and sometimes the piece is named but no author. The Pyrenees, Yalta, Sebastopol, Tyre, Pisa, Bordeaux, Toronto, Canada and numerous other places are mentioned. Over 60 odd pages, a lifetime of travel, we see dates from the 1850s through the 1870s, each dried grass or floral sample is lovingly featured in a hand drawn frame and even a tissue protector has been glued over the plant for protection. A caption almost always notes the name of the plant and where it was picked or found. For example the Sebastopol pages have a sample of 'grass from the walls of Sebastopol', then a page of text entitled 'The Interior of Sebastopol September 12 1853'. Further dates within the book are March 1850 relating to Toronto, through to August 1879, 'gathered under the cedars of Lebanon'. The book is loose bound with the top string missing. The covers are decorated in decoupage, with initials 'EC' to the front. While the book proper is a shambles and barely held with string, the interiors are clean and legible. The book measures 18.5cm by 11cm and appears complete. A very charming, unusual example of travel memories of Victorian era. Fair.. Book Condition: Fair
