Visually the exterior appearance is spectacular for a book of it's age and nature,i.e a child's book, and even internally, the book is virtually pristine and in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation.
BERYL THE PERIL is a fictional character created by David Law who was also the creator of Dennis the Menace; for the first issue (No.1 - dated 7th February, 1953) of a British children's weekly comic 'The TOPPER' that was published by Dundee based D.C. THOMSON & Co.,Ltd.Her last appearance was in the 'DANDY comic - issue No.3610 (4th December,2012).Like Dennis, she wore black and red clothes, and tormented her parents, her teachers and other members of her community.Although not having as many appearances as other D.C. Thomson characters like Dennis the Menace or Desperate Dan,she is still considered one of the classic characters defining the popularity of UK comics.
After 1970,when her original creator retired, the strip was taken over by Bob McGrath and then later by John Dallas. In 1986 Beryl became The TOPPER's front page star of the comic, replacing Tricky Dicky. Her dog Pearl was also introduced shortly before that time, although before that she had a pet turkey called Gobbler. She remained with the comic when 'The TOPPER' merged with 'The BEEZER' in 1990.With BEEZER and TOPPER ceasing in August 1993, Beryl joined 'The DANDY' comic, notably as the only BEEZER and TOPPER character to transfer to 'The DANDY',as soon as the former comic folded.
Beryl was one of the few of D.C. Thomson's characters to earn an annual all to herself, consisting solely from reprints in past years. The annuals were traditionally published in the Autumn for the Christmas market,bi-annually starting in 1959 until 1977,then becoming irregular and finally finishing in 1988.The first 4 annuals were undated, but from 1967 were dated until the last annual issue of 1988.
