More than half the book consists of notes by Bishop Colenso expanding on points raised in Vijn's journal about the conduct of the war and events preceding and following it. There are also two appendices: "The Zulu Military System". and "A Protest Against the Zulu War." Ian Knight, in 'The Zulu War Then and Now', describes Vijn as a Dutch trader detained by King Cetshwayo throughout the war, and quotes from the journal, 'The general remark of the Zulus was, "Why could not the whites fight us in the open? But, if they are too much afraid to do this, we have never fought with men who were so much afraid of death as these. They are continually making holes in the ground and mounds left open with little holes to shoot through. The English burrow in the ground like wild pigs. The Boer are of more worth, who dare to come at once into the open field”.
