UK,slim 8vo card wraps,(nd but 1949),minus glassine dw/dj,1st edn.VG+.No owner inscrptn.Very light spotting to Rex Whistler colour, decorated bds, with light grubbing/stains to top+bottom front corners; rear corners slightly bumped with bottom corner slightly rubbed.Head+foot of spine/backstrip also lightly bumped and creased.Slight foxing/spotting to both front and rear pastedowns of eps; eps very much less affected which seems to be a common fault,in varying degrees, from the copies I have handled - probably caused by the presence of the glassine dw/dj and which might explain why there are proportionately more copies without dw/dj than with.Either state, copies are uncommon with and even rarer with.Described hard but fairly.UK,8vo HB minus dw/dj,1st edn, 77pp,chain-laid paper includes two colour illustrations by Rex Whistler in text.See also rja2014 (with dw/dj.) Reginald John Whistler(1905-1944).Worked as Rex Whistler.Born 24th June (Midsummer Day)1905, second of three sons,at Eltham, Kent, and elder brother of glass engraver Laurence Whistler. His gifts were evident early;he studied for a year at the Royal Academy Schools, then moved to the Slade School of Fine Art(1922-26),where Professor Tonks admired and encouraged his work. After some small commissions, his chance came in 1926 when he was invited to design and paint mural decorations in the Tate Gallery Refreshment Room.'The Pursuit of Rare Meats',a lively Rococo architectural fantasy (inspired by the Temple Gardens of Stowe and Wilton), epitomises the style he was to make his own.Their success brought work and social popularity, and he became a prolific illustrator and designer. His most important book is 'Gulliver's Travels' (Cresset Press,1935),illustrated with full plates, maps and head and tail pieces in fine pen and ink with colour washes on the larger plates applied by hand. The full- page illustrations have elaborate Baroque borders,at times almost overwhelming the inset drawings. The effect is superb, and Whistler's 'Gulliver' remains one of the great illustrated books of the 20thC.Other notable works include the much acclaimed 'New Forget-Me-Not'(1929) and 'Fairy Tales'(1935).All his work reflects his own personal charm and lively wit.As well as being one of the outstanding illustrators of his generation,Whistler promised to be a great and original stage designer; his work for ballet, plays and opera included The Rake's Progress,Laurence Housman's Victoria Regina,Fidelio and The Marriage of Figaro. In 1940,he volunteered for the Welsh Guards;he was killed on active service in 1944. UK,slim 8vo HB+glassine dw/dj,1st edn.(Not dated but 1949.)NFINE/VG++.No owner inscrptn,no clip to glassine dw/dj. Pictorial, colour illustration by Rex Whistler, cream card bds which are generally very clean except for a small, tiny grease(?) spot to rear bd - illustration unaffected - and a sellotape (?) residue L-shaped mark,of approx 1.25" to rear bd's spine/backstrip edge, near the top of same.[It looks to me,as the dw/dj has been removed from the book and stored flat, the wrong way round against the rear bd,as the similar mark is actually to the front panel, towards top, front spine/ backstrip edge!]The dw/dj has minimal shelf-wear and negligible creasing to edges, two tiny closed tears - no loss - and very light, minimal foxing/spotting to front panel. An excellent example, given it's fragility and age,and a rare occurrence,to still be with the book as it is so plain and drab looking - almost like aged greaseproof paper!! Minimal rubbing to edges, miniscule bumping to both head+ foot of spine/backstrip - no nicks or tears - with only the front, bottom corner actually bumped, plain white/cream eps with slight scattered foxing towards edges, repeated to both pastedowns but to a lesser degree - part due to quality of glue used, with it bleeding through.Top edge minimally aged and minimally foxed/ spotted; fore-edge considerably cleaner and less foxed/spotted; contents bright, tight and virtually pristine.UK,slim 8vo HB+glassine dw/dj,1st edn,11-77pp includes half-title+title pages,Pts 1+2 both of which have a Rex Whistler colour illustration to start of each.Signature "I" (pp65-72) have their top edges unopened. All pages made from chain-laid paper with CM Italia INGRES water-mark. Printed in England by WELBECSON PRESS LTD.,39-43 BATTERSEA HIGH STREET,LONDON.
