Weigel, Christoph: : Novissima Tabula Regionis Ludovicianae Gallice dictae La Louisiane

Copper engraving, 32 x 42 cms, original hand-colour with decorative black and white cartouche, as issued. Short split with old repair on verso. The cartouche commemorates the Louisianna Bubble.

The Louisianna Bubble burst in 1720. A womanizing, gambling but brilliant Scottish financier called John Law left England for France under dubious circumstances in 1714 and won the confidence of the Duke of Orleans, then Regent of France. The French economy was in a mess after years of reckeless spending under Louis XIV. Law was allowed to set up the Mississipi Company, which controlled all trade with France’s (then) vast and largely unexplored American possessions, believed to be rich in gold and silver. He was allowed to open his own bank, and crucially he issued paper money based on the supposed value of shares in the company. Eventually he was minting French coinage, collecting taxes and to a large extent controlling the French economy. Put simply, the value of the shares soared, the French economy boomed, more paper notes were issued without any sort of solid backing, and then the whole thing crashed.
